• The Kiwi lives only in New Zealand, and are the national symbol of New Zealand.

• Kiwis grow to the size of a chicken and weigh between three and nine pounds.  Kiwis have no tail but tiny two inch sized wings, which are useless seeing the Kiwi cannot fly.

• The Kiwi is a flightless bird and nocturnal.

• The Kiwi has become endangered from the introduction of rats, ferrets, wild dogs and cats, introduced by early settlers to New Zealand.  Prior to human settlement in New Zealand may have been 12 million Kiwi.  Today, there are fewer than 20,000 Kiwis left in existence.

• Despite its awkward appearance, a kiwi can outrun a human and have managed to survive because of their alertness and their sharp, three-toed feet, which enable them to kick and slash an enemy.

• The Kiwis have very bad vision, most birds traditionally depend on sight, the Kiwi is one of the few birds with a highly developed sense of smell.  Its nostrils are located at the end of their long beak.  The Kiwi sniffs out food at bill length below the surface of the ground.  They mainly feed on earthworms, spiders, fallen fruits, seeds, larvae and other beetles.

• Kiwi tend to live in pairs, forming monogamous couples.  These bonds are generally till death and have been known to last for over 30 years.
