Location

New Zealand is located 995 miles to the South East of Australia.  It is comprised to two main Islands - the North and the South Islands, and various smaller islands.  New Zealand lies on top of two techtonic plates, which makes New Zealand a very hilly and volcanic place.

Land

New Zealand incorporates the vast mountain chain of the Southern Alps (larger than the French, Austrian and Swiss Alps combined); the volcano region of the North Island; fiords; glaciers; lakes; rainforests; stunning beaches; and extensive grassy plains.

History of Habitation

Polynesian settlers arrived in Aotearoa/(the maori name for New Zealand) New Zealand about the 10th century, and by the 12th century settlements were scattered around the coastline. Aotearoa was visited briefly by the Dutch navigator Abel Tasman in 1642. However, it was not until 1769 that the British naval captain James Cook and his crew became the first Europeans to explore New Zealand's coastline thoroughly.  Further information
