Handcrafted Wood Turned Jewelry
In conjunction with my Father, Bryden Thorpe, who is a well known New Zealand Wood Turning Artist, we have created one-of-a-kind jewelry. He uses wood that is native to New Zealand and Australia and natural Paua Shell from New Zealand. These pieces start off as thousand year old fallen trees, sometimes preserved from swamps. He hand cuts the wood, intricately turns it into artful shapes, sets Paua Shell, then hand polishes it. This process can take several hours per piece. He then ships it to myself, located in the United States to create into one of a kind jewelry. All pendants are one of a kind and cannot be reproduced to ensure a one of a kind piece of handcrafted jewelry. All findings are Sterling Silver and all Leather is top quality Greek Leather. These pieces are original wearable or display art.

Swamp Kauri Timber: Kauri trees are a tree which is native only to New Zealand. Even in a New Zealand rainforest, you can pick a Kauri Tree for their unique look. They grow for many hundreds of years and can reach heights of up to 300 feet. Because Kauri trees take many, many years to mature, the wood is rare and prized in New Zealand. Swamp Kauri is used in these pendants. Swamp Kauri are trees and stumps recovered from dried out swamp land or marshes which has been found as the land has been reclaimed for farmland. As the land had dried out, logs have surfaced. They are recovered and milled for the much prized timber. Samples of Swamp kauri have been carbon dated and age figures of 20,000 to 50,000 years are not uncommon. The natural oils and waxes in the wood help preserve the logs and the swampy water has enhanced the colors in the woodgrain. These Kauri trees were felled by some unexplained natural disasters and have been sunk in swamps for many thousands of years until recovered and treasured in recent years. The color of swamp Kauri is dark green/slight khaki. The wood is a soft and caramel wood Casuarina - Common Name "Flame She-oak" This is a native Australian tree much prized for its unusual and colorful grain markings giving it an orange 'zebra' stripe.
Pohutukawa Tree Timber The Pohutukawa Tree is another native New Zealand tree. Also known as the 'New Zealand Christmas Tree as it flowers bright red, bottle shaped flowers around December (the New Zealand summer). The Pohutukawa Tree is a coastal tree, finding footing in rocky crevices and beach fronts. It is not unusual to find Pohutukawa Trees on the craggy cliffs of New Zealand.
Swamp Totara Timber: Totara trees are native to New Zealand. As with Swamp Kauri, this timber of Swamp Totara are stumps recovered from dried out swamp land or marshes from hundreds of thousands of years ago, found when land has been reclaimed for farmland. As the land had dried out, logs have surfaced. They are recovered and milled for the much prized and rare (in this state) timber. The natural oils and waxes in the wood help preserve the logs and the swampy water has enhanced the colors in the woodgrain. These Totara trees were felled by some unexplained New Zealand natural disasters and have been sunk in swamps for many thousands of years until recovered and treasured in recent years. The color of swamp Totara is dark, almost ebony colored wood. | |||
